While we tend to think of coaches typically in the area of athletics, business coaches are a growing trend nationwide. Business Coaching is not consulting. Consulting is a process by which someone with an expertise in a particular business or industry is brought in to provide answers regarding a specific technical issue within the business. For example, ACME Plastic Widgets might enlist the services of Plastic Widget Consultancy to learn how to increase the output of plastic widgets being produced. A business coach is often a former executive or entrepreneur who is charged with assisting a business owner or executive to find their answers through two-way interaction, diligent questioning and committed listening. It is about the business owner’s agenda, not the coach’s agenda. Additionally, business coaching is not therapy. Whereas therapy tends to treat emotional impasses and focus on the past, business coaching is more focused on the future and on skills improvement. As balance is critical to business success, business coaches do spend some time on personal matters, but a credible coach will recommend a more appropriate professional if emotional issues become an impediment to the process of improving overall business performance.
